Cystoscope Sheaths
Cystoscope Sheaths are used to introduce Cystoscopes, Resectoscopes, Ureteroscopes and bladder irrigation/installation fluid directly into the urinary tract during Urological procedures. It's crucial to ensure these devices are clean and in good working order to minimize any risk of patient injury or introduction of potential contaminants into the urinary tract:
Some points to consider when performing borescope inspections on these sheaths:
Preparation:
- Ensure borescopes are sized appropriately to view inside of all components of the sheath to be inspected
Areas to inspect:
- Cystoscope/Bridge attachment mechanism
- Drainage/irrigation ports, including entire lumen if possible
- Drainage/irrigation valves
- Scope lumen of sheath
- Instrument channel of sheath
- Tip of sheath
What to look for:
- Damage
- Scope/bridge attachment mechanism loose, worn or broken
- Drainage/irrigation valves loose, worn or broken
- Surfaces scratched or gouged
- Pitting from corrosion
- Same types of damage for resectoscope/ureteroscope bridge(s), if included with cystoscope sheath
- Debris
- Filaments from cleaning implements
- Tissue fragments
- Blood clots
- Bladder installation chemical powders
- Discoloration
- Dried blood
- Dried Bladder installation chemicals
- Rust/corrosion
- Base metal showing through stainless steel layer
- Hard water/mineral deposits
- Droplets
- Blood
- Irrigation/installation fluid
- Cleaning fluid, including simethicone
- Rinse water
